How to write product descriptions that help shoppers

A useful product description helps a customer decide whether an item meets a particular need. Explain its purpose, specifications and limitations in the order a shopper is likely to ask about them.

Lead with information that supports a choice

Name the item and its main use, then explain what separates the variants. For a backpack, compartment dimensions and pocket layout are more informative than “perfect for everyday life”. A shopper needs to know whether their laptop will fit.

Replace claims with concrete detail

Before: “The best backpack for everyone”. After: “A city backpack with a separate 33 × 24 × 2 cm compartment. Measure your laptop with its case. An external pocket holds a bottle, while a zipped rear pocket separates small items”.

This is a fictional example. Verify your own measurements and features against an actual product and its documentation.

Use a consistent structure

  1. What the item is and its intended use.
  2. Important features and practical benefits.
  3. Specifications and variants.
  4. Included and separately sold items.
  5. Care, use and limitations.

A consistent layout helps comparison. It does not justify copying identical text across products with different materials or uses.

Use AI as an editing assistant

Supply verified facts and ask the model to organise them without adding properties. Set the brand voice and section length. Check every number and claim against the source, especially certification or safety claims.

Review copy and images together

If the copy mentions three pockets, show them. Variant selection should keep the photograph, name and price aligned. On mobile, make key specifications easy to scan and remove internal notes before publishing.
