Store delivery: the details your customers need

Separate preparation from transit time. Keep delivery costs, timing and messages consistent across product pages, the cart and order updates.

Store delivery: the details your customers need

“Fast delivery” does not answer when an item will be ready, how it will travel or what shipping costs. Clear information helps customers decide whether an order suits their occasion.

Separate preparation from transit

Making or packing an item is different from transporting it. Explain when fulfilment starts and the estimated transit period after dispatch. Avoid a guaranteed arrival date unless you can actually provide one.

Explain how the price is calculated

Shipping may depend on the address, method, parcel size or order value. Explain relevant rules before checkout. If you offer free shipping above a threshold, establish whether it uses the amount before or after discounts. Progress messages and checkout must use the same rule.

Maintain a consistent information source

Write the complete policy, then adapt short versions for product pages, the cart and messages. A fictional example: “Preparation takes 2–3 working days; estimated transit after dispatch depends on the selected service”. Replace this with verified information for your own store.

Handle unusual cases

  • Made-to-order items.
  • A cart with different preparation times.
  • Addresses outside the delivery area.
  • Oversized products.
  • No available method after an address change.

Explain the issue and provide a next step rather than leaving an empty delivery selector.

Check post-purchase messages

Confirm the chosen method accurately. Add tracking only when a valid reference exists. Compare published estimates with actual preparation times and correct the underlying information when they diverge.
