Store checkout: remove obstacles to purchasing

Clear totals, useful fields and reliable error handling. Review checkout from the shopping cart through confirmation of a test payment.

Store checkout: remove obstacles to purchasing

Checkout should help customers complete a decision they have already made. Unclear totals, lost input and vague errors are more important to fix than the colour of a button.

Explain the final amount

Separate products, discounts and delivery. If shipping depends on the address, explain this before requesting it. Quantity and shipping changes should update the total. Check that refreshing does not apply a discount twice.

Ask for relevant information

Give every field a clear label and purpose. Delivery, collection and business purchases may require different information. Reveal additional fields when needed. Helpful examples and nearby errors are better than expecting customers to guess formats.

Plan recovery from payment problems

Interrupted payment is a normal scenario. Explain whether an order exists and how to continue. A return URL alone must not mark an order as paid; payment confirmation needs a verified system state.

Run five test scenarios

  1. A straightforward single-product purchase.
  2. Multiple variants and changed quantities.
  3. Valid and invalid discount codes.
  4. Rejected or interrupted payment followed by retry.
  5. Refreshing confirmation without creating another order.

Check the admin order, confirmation message and final amount for every scenario. Use the provider's test environment where available.

Interpret outcomes carefully

A rise in completed orders does not prove that a button-label change caused it. Availability, pricing and traffic may also have changed. Record the date and scope of each improvement, compare similar conditions and review error rates and customer questions alongside purchases.
